There actually is an oil industry created shortage of some fiber types. Enough of a problem for Glen Raven (Sunbrella) to shut down fabric production until they can get a stand-alone fiber production facility up and running.

They're dropping $250 million on it, and taking some big losses from the lack of production, so getting out from under the thumb of the shortage producers must be worth it.
